What Youth Net Can Do For You

Focus Groups

What’s a focus group?

Ø   Focus Groups are hour and a half-long “rap sessions” for youth ages 12-20.

Ø   Groups are lead by older youth between the ages of 16-30.

Ø  The goal is to discuss issues that are important to youth today, and to uncover
the impact these issues have on their mental health.

Ø   Issues such as: what is mental health/illness; what stress you out; how do you
cope with stress; and what resources are available to you are some discussion
 topics.

Ø   Facilitators do one-on-one follow-ups with any at-risk youth and refer them
 to clinical back-up when necessary.

Ø  Clinical back-up is available on site or by pager during each focus group.

Ø   Our clinical back-up is provided by Mobile Crisis of Peel and Peel Children’s Centre Crisis Response Service.

The topics for the 5 workshops are as follows:

Workshop One: Causes of Mental Illness, Treatments and Crisis Skills

Workshop Two: Mood Disorders

Workshop Three: Anxiety Disorders & Phobias

Workshop Four: Schizophrenia & Personality Disorders

Workshop Five: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder & Obsessive Compulsive                                              Disorder

If these workshops sound like something you would like, please give us a call and we can let you know how the piloting process is going and when we hope to be offering the workshops to the public.
